May] Calvin College Seminars
|
 |
|
We attended the international interdisciplinary
conference, the 2001 Calvin College Seminars in Christian Scholarship
held in Calvin College, May 24-26, 2001, which has an international
reputation as a center of faith-shaped learning and scholarship.
In the seminar with Dr. William Dembski with the theme of 'Design,
Self-organization, and Integrity of Creation', featured speakers
and their themes were as follows. |
| William Dembski, Baylor University:
"Specified Complexity: Is There Another Way to Detect Design?"
Jed Macosko, University of California, Berkeley: "Life's Molecular
Machines: By Chance or By Design?" Stephen Meyer, Whitworth
College: "DNA by Design" Scott Minnich, University of Idaho:
"The Bacterial Flagellum as a Paradigm for irreducible Complexity"
Paul Nelson, Discovery Institute: "Prospects for Intelligent
Design as a Biological Research Program" Alvin Plantinga, University
of Notre Dame: "Science, Religion, and Epistemology" Jonathan
Wells, Discovery Institute: "Designer Genes" |
 |
|
This lecture dealt with complex organized
structures that cannot be reduced to their constituent parts.
Two approaches to account for organized complexity were introduced:
intelligent design and complex organization. It is the main
viewpoint that design places front and center the wisdom of
God in creation but seems to allow for almost magical intrusions
into the natural order, while self-organization places a premium
on preserving the integrity but seemingly leaves no evidence
of the divine handiwork.
Specially Dr
Jurgen Moltmann, Professor of Systematic Theology Eberhard-Karls
Universitat, Tubingen delivered the good public lectures with
two themes, 'The Church of the Holy Spirit: On the Future of
Christianity' and 'Progress or Abyss: Remembering the Future
of the Modern World' in the Calvin College Chapel. |

November] Yale's Law School auditorium
|
 |
|
Over 350 people from the United States and Europe
attended this conference and lots of famous scholars presented
evidence that the universe and human life are intelligently
designed in a three-day symposium which took place in Yale's
Law School auditorium on Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 2-4, after
two years of preparation. |
| |
|
|
 |
|
During the event, titled "Science
and Evidence for Design in the Universe", scientists
examined research in such disciplines as astronomy, biology,
philosophy, physics and paleobiology to explore whether intelligent
design theory may provide a "valuable
and scientifically responsible paradigm" for the
understanding of the origin and complexity of the universe and
life. |
| |
|
|

David
and Karen Mahan |
|
The symposium was cosponsored by Rivendell
Institute for Christian Thought and Learning, the
Discovery Institute,
the Yale Law School Forum on Cultural and Academic Freedom,
and Yale Students for Christ. The key researchers in intelligent
design showed what the whole program was. It was really unique
opportunity to get a positive overview of the entire intelligent
design program. Several of the speakers at the symposium, including
Philip Johnson, William Dembski and Michael Behe, have appeared
in the national media as spokespersons for intelligent design
theory. These sessions were featured vigorous exchanges from
science faculty and students. |
| |
|
|
 |
|
Joon-ha Hwang, Johnny Kim and Sang-hoon Yeo attended
the conference. The main moderator, David Mahan, Director of
the Rivendell Institute for Christian
Thought & Learning at Yale University, introduced
three of them to all attendants The institute feels this event
furthered the cause of challenging current view of science and
the study of origins, and expects more fruit from that momentum
as it spreads to other campuses. |

[2000 October] Leading researcher
of Intelligent Design Movement,
Dr. William A. Dembski visited |
| Leading researcher of Intelligent
Design Movement, Dr. William A. Dembski visited our
institute in October. He attended the congratulating parade
and party of the 18th erecting anniversary of Manmin Joong-ang
Church and delivered a congratulatory message. He was very pleased
to see the anniversary party and grateful to Rev. Lee Jae-Rock
and the church for inviting. And he complimented on their vision
and hope. |
 |
|
And he visited the Alliance Holiness Theological
Seminary and made an speech of 'Science
of Intelligence: Understanding ID' for students and
Joon-Ha Hwang, director of MRC interpreted it. He said that
we have statistical methodology for uncovering design and then
we apply that methodology to various biological systems, natural
systems. These can also be applied actually to questions of
cosmology, fine-tuning of the universe, etc. |
| William
A. Dembski |
|
|
| Taking an example of SETI (Search
for the ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence), he explained we have
methodology for identifying the effect of intelligence and can
apply these methods to the natural sciences. And he added there
are things out there in the world that point us to an intelligence
and we identify these things are intelligently caused. He concluded
ID is tremendous challenge to materialistic philosophy and Darwinism
which have dominated the sciences. |

June] Attended the conference on intelligent design at Concordia
University |
 |
|
June, 22-24, 2000, Joon-ha Hwang, Jonny Kim and
Sang- hoon Yeo attended the conference on intelligent design
at Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin, "Design
and Its Critics" This conference sought to articulate
the best criticisms of Intelligent Design theory and to allow
its proponents to address these concerns. It was organized by
Dr. Angus Menuge, professor of philosophy in Concordia University. |

with power point and video in the concurrent session 'Design

Intelligent Design(William A. Dembski, Michael J. Behe, Stephen
Meyer, Paul Nelson, Robin Collins, etc) and its critics(Kenneth
Miller, Michael Ruse, Michael Shemer, et al). And professor
of physics in Cambridge University, Brian Josephson, a Nobel
Laureate in physics, also attended. |

|
 |
|
Director of Michael Polany Center, William A.
Dembski arrived in Manmin Joong-ang Church, Seoul in May for
three-day visit.
He delivered a speech on "Detecting
Intelligent Design in Nature" at Hankuk University
of Foreign Studies on May 17.(Moderator: Kwang-youl Kim)(Interpreter:
Joon-ha Hwang) He attended Revd. Lee Jae-Rock's Two Weeks Special
Revival Meeting held in Manmin Joong-ang Church, and was quite
impressed by cases of divine healing. |

April] Attended the conference on naturalism in Baylor University |
April, 12-15, 2000, Joon-ha Hwang,
Jonny Kim (Director of ManminTV) and Sang-hoon Yeo(Chairman
of Luke Medical Mission) attended the conference on naturalism
in Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
"The Nature of Nature: An interdisciplinary
conference on the role of naturalism in science",
which is another way to describe what might be a new accord
between Science and Religion. The conference was organized by
Baylor University's Michael Polany Center (Director: William
A. Dembski). |
 |
|
The conference included so many big names in the
academic and scientific world. Philosophers like Alvin
Plantinga and historians and science-philosophers
like Ronald Numbers, Everett Mendelsohn, scientists like Steven
Weinberg (Nobel Laureate in Physics), Henry Schaeffer III and
Alan J. Guth, Christian de Duve (Nobel Laureate in Physiology
and Medicine), theologians like Nancy Murphey, science- writers
